FAQ

What are oil-absorbent socks made of?

Oil-absorbent socks are made of a thermoplastic polymer material called polypropylene. Polypropylene is hydrophobic and oleophilic, which means that it can easily soak up oil-based liquids while repelling water-based liquids.

What are absorbent socks?

Absorbent socks are long, sausage-like tubes that are filled with a type of absorbent material. An absorbent sock can be universal, which means that it can soak up a variety of liquids. Oil-only absorbent socks, however, can only be used for oil-based liquids.

What is a spill sock used for?

Because of their shape, spill socks are used to contain a spill within an area, preventing the liquid from spreading further or leaking into drainage systems. The socks can be used to form a barrier or a sort of dike around the spill. They’re essential to the maintenance of industrial facilities and job sites.

How do you use absorbent socks?

Absorbent socks are usually stored coiled up. When you need to use them, simply uncoil them and position the socks around the spill. The number of socks you need to use will depend on how far the spill has spread.

Is an absorbent sock better than an absorbent pad or pillow?

It is a question of how big the spill you are going to clean up as well as whether it is spreading at an alarming rate. Absorbent socks are best used for containing liquid spills in a single area so that it does not spread further. You can also use them in irregularly shaped spaces where a liquid spill must have reached.

On the other hand, you use absorbent pillows if you need to clean up a lot more liquid spill which has already spread in a larger area. Absorbent pads are ideal for immediately cleaning up small spills of up to 20 ounces.

What is the maximum amount of liquid can TRADESAFE Absorbent Socks absorb?

This depends on the size of the absorbent sock you are going to use. For your reference, these are the following sizes we currently have along with their absorbency capacity. These measurements are applicable for both universal and oil-only absorbent socks:

  • 3” x 4’ - 5.25 L (1.4 gal)
  • 3” x 8’ -  10.5 L (2.75 gal)
  • 3” x 12’ - 15.75 L (4.15 gal)

What are TRADESAFE Absorbent socks made of?

The filler of our universal absorbent socks is made of melt-blown 100% polypropylene, while their outer covering is made of an abrasion-resistant nylon mesh steel hook. As for our oil-only socks, the filler is also made from melt-blown, but the outer skin is an abrasion-resistant spunbond fabric.

Can I use TRADESAFE Oil-Only Absorbent Socks on water?

Definitely! Since diesel, gasoline, fuel, and other oils are less dense than water, they will always float on water. As such, the best absorbent you should use on spilled oil on a large body of water is an oil-only absorbent sock. This way, the oil spill will be easily contained in a limited area for faster cleanup.

Are TRADESAFE Absorbent Socks lint free?

Yes. We designed the high-quality fiber construction of our absorbent socks so that they do not leave behind any liquid or fiber residue after use.

Aside from absorbent socks, does TRADESAFE offer non-slip mats for auto repair shops?

Yes. TRADESAFE Anti-Slipping Oil Mat Roll is not only great for car repair shops, but also in any workplace that uses fuels, diesel, cutting fluids, coolants, and more. With an absorbency capacity of 48 L per roll, our oil mat is also great for catching leaks from these sources. Using an oil mat roll greatly minimizes the slipping hazard for operators. It is also friction-resistant and can withstand heavy truck or forklift traffic.
