Lockout tagout devices typically come in the form of personal safety padlocks, circuit breaker locks, valve locks, plug locks, and tags. Devices such as cable locks and lock boxes are also instrumental in a variety of lockout tagout procedures.

These devices are used to securely de-energize machines and physically isolate sources of hazardous energy. They warn and prevent unauthorized personnel and other employees from re-energizing a machine that’s meant to be turned off for certain purposes, including repairs and maintenance.

A lockout tagout device has to be able to fit on or over switches, valves, circuit breakers, and more. The device will then be secured with at least one personal safety padlock.

OSHA has a few requirements that lockout tagout devices must meet. This is why, for example, ordinary padlocks and common products are not recommended for use in lockout tagout. Lockout tagout devices should be manufactured in accordance with certain specifications so they can be OSHA compliant. · Durability

Lockout tagout devices have to be made of materials that can withstand corrosive substances, impact, extreme temperatures, chemicals, water, and more.

 

· Standardized characteristics

The color, dimensions, shape, and other characteristics of the devices should be standardized. This includes tags, whose print and format should also be standardized. Additionally, the instructions on the tags have to be clear and easy to read.

 

· Substantiality

The devices must not be easy to remove or destroy. Only the use of excessive force should be able to remove the devices when necessary. Even tag attachments should be able to withstand all sorts of environments.

 

· Proper labels

All lockout tagout devices used in a company’s lockout tagout procedures should be labeled properly. The labels should clearly identify the employees that installed the locks.

Only authorized employees are allowed to lock out and/or tag out machines or equipment. However, there are certain requirements for an employee to be considered as an authorized employee. Employers must be able to provide proper training, and authorized employees must have the knowledge and skills necessary to properly and safely apply, use, and remove lockout tagout devices.

Additionally, devices can only be removed by the authorized employees that installed them. However, there can be circumstances in which a lockout tagout device has to be removed but the employee that installed it is unavailable. In these situations, the employer has to supervise another employee in removing the device.

The process of de-energization entails isolating machinery, equipment, or systems from a source of energy. In lockout tagout, however, de-energization does not mean simply unplugging a machine; it means preventing the accidental or inadvertent re-energization of a machine.

When a machine is de-energized, it should also be properly locked out and tagged out. Lockout tagout entails the use of certain devices that will make the safe de-energization and re-energization of a machine possible.

Gate valve locks are typically designed to be able to cover the entire handwheel of a gate valve. To use one of these locks, simply open it up and fit the two halves over a gate valve’s handwheel. 

Make sure that the handwheel is in the off position. You will then have to secure the two halves together with a personal safety padlock. You will also have to attach a tag to warn and provide pertinent information to other employees.

Lockout tagout devices are installed on switches, valves, plugs, and the like. Because lockout tagout involves a variety of energy sources and machinery, different lockout tagout devices are used in different ways.

 

· Padlocks

Personal safety padlocks are used to secure lockout tagout devices such as valve locks, circuit breaker locks, plug locks, cable locks, and lock boxes. Each padlock belongs to an authorized employee and should be labeled with information that identifies its owner.

 

· Valve locks

Valve locks should be fitted over valve handles then secured with a personal safety lock. Employees will not be able to physically access a valve’s handwheel as long as a valve lock is installed on it.

 

· Circuit breaker locks

Circuit breaker locks prevent the accidental switching on of electrical circuits. Employees can install them by clamping them over circuit breaker switches. The locks will then need to be secured with personal safety padlocks.

 

· Plug locks

A plug lock prevents a machine from being plugged in, which in turn prevents electricity from flowing into that machine. The machine’s plug is encased in the plug lock, after which the lock is secured with a padlock.

 

· Cable locks

There are bound to be situations in which a switch or a valve is in a spot that’s difficult to access, making lockout tagout difficult as well. A cable lock is versatile and can be used in hard-to-reach areas, thus making lockout tagout possible. 

 

· Tags

Tags are an essential part of lockout tagout and should thus be included with every lock installed. They all come with a tie hole that allows them to be attached to locks. Additionally, they are writable and can be labeled with information about the lockout tagout procedure that’s underway.

 

· Hasps

Hasps are versatile and can be used on lockouts for valves, circuit breakers, and a variety of machines. Each hasp comes with multiple padlock holes that allow multiple employees to lock out a single machine, valve, or panel.

 

· Lock boxes

When personal safety padlocks are currently in use in a lockout tagout procedure, their keys can be stored and secured in a lock box. The lock box itself can also be secured by multiple padlocks belonging to all employees involved in the procedure. This ensures that no machine, valve, or panel will be re-energized until all employees are done with their lockout tagout tasks.
