Kits

OSHA has a number of regulations set in place to protect employees and the surrounding environment of any potential chemical spill. As such, industrial workplaces are required to have absorbents and kits ready to contain and isolate spills when it happens. Under 29 CFR 1910.120(J)(1)(vii), a spill kit is specifically required by OSHA to be available in areas where spills, leaks, or ruptures may occur.

When working with hazardous liquid substances, no matter how careful one can be, accidental spills may still happen. A spill kit is a must-have when managing spills. TRADESAFE offers spill kits that include pads for for emergent leakage containment, pillows for persistent liquid drips and leaks, and socks for spill containment to avoid spreading. A disposal hazmat bag for saturated absorbent collection and cleanup as well as a reusable, refillable, and corrosion-resistant storage drum also come in our kits.

Absorbents FAQs

What is a hazardous chemical according to OSHA?

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) defines a hazardous chemical as “any chemical which is classified as a physical hazard or a health hazard, a simple asphyxiant, combustible dust, pyrophoric gas, or hazard not otherwise classified.”

What are the OSHA requirements for spill kits?

Spill kits must include components that meet OSHA standards for proper decontamination. There are different types of absorbent supplies and every workplace must always have the right absorbents for specific chemical or substance spills. Furthermore, OSHA published HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard), which highlights the accepted standards when working with hazardous substances. Though the spill containment process cannot be generally standardized because it varies from workplace to workplace, industries are required to observe HAZWOPER in any dealings with hazardous substances.

What is SPCC?

SPCC stands for spill prevention, control, and countermeasure. The primary purpose of SPCC is to prevent oil spills. If the spill does happen, it provides specific guidelines on how to properly contain and clean up the spill.

Is spill containment training required?

Absorbent supplies are useless if workers don’t know when and how to use such materials in spill containment. Training is mandatory for every workplace to ensure every employee knows and understands the process of spill containment and clean up. Different types of hazards that might be encountered should also be covered and hands-on training on how to properly use the absorbent supplies should be provided.

Is it really necessary to have absorbent supplies in the workplace?

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 29 CFR 1910.120 states that when there is a possibility of spills in the workplace, a spill containment program must be in place. This already includes the need to have absorbent supplies readily available for any kind of spill that may occur. Different liquid substances require specific types of absorbents. Therefore, businesses should ensure that they keep appropriate and reliable absorbent supplies for the chemicals they deal with.

Can a spill kit be reused?

Spill kits are designed for one-time use only. No industry is allowed to reuse a sorbent once it has already been used to absorb spill. After usage, spill kits should be properly disposed of immediately.

There is always a possibility of liquid chemical spill no matter how much caution any industry takes. When absolute avoidance is unlikely, safety measures are still required to ensure no one neglects the imminent dangers in dealing with hazardous chemicals. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 states that when a large spill may occur, a spill containment program shall be implemented to contain and isolate the entire volume of the hazardous substance. As such, it helps to have readily available spill-control absorbents to comply with OSHA standards. TRADESAFE offers highly efficient and first-rate absorbent products that can contain accidental spills before they cause any serious dangers. We have absorbent kits, socks, pillows, pads, oil-only, sweep-off, and universal absorbents that can help keep hazardous liquids from harming employees or contaminating the surroundings. Simply, we have a solution to every spill problem you may have. Each of our absorbent supplies is OSHA-compliant and guaranteed to be durable and reliable.
